“Drink more water”. It seems to be such a simple phrase. Even as I write this, my water bottle is sitting half full, staring at me like a 500-pound immovable object. I reach for it and, alas, I feel a sense of accomplishment. I see the bottle emptying as a sign of my well-being as the rush of my sip waterfalls down into my stomach, cooling everything it touches.
Dehydration is defined by simple math: if the amount of water lost is greater than the amount of water consumed, our bodies become dehydrated. When it comes to health, there’s no magic bullet, but staying hydrated hits several important and unique bodily benefits. Here are just a few of the many reasons maintaining a healthy hydration is important, if not essential, for optimum health.
Body Fluid Balance. Our bodies are composed of approximately 60% water. This internal water facilitates digestive functions, nutrient absorption, creation of saliva, transportation of nutrients, has involvement in chemical reactions, and helps maintain our temperature.
Hunger and Calorie Control. Did you know the mechanism that triggers hunger is closely tied to thirst? Feeling hungry may just be our body trying to tell us it needs water. Staying hydrated may stop you from grabbing an unnecessary snack or overeating. Guess what happens if we drink water before a meal or keep our stomachs with a consistent level of fluid inside? We eat less. We fill our stomachs with less food because we have filled the otherwise empty space with water.
Smooth Move. Staying hydrated keeps things in your gut moving and can help curb constipation. Our bodies are resourceful. When our bodies are dehydrated, the colon will absorb water from stool, resulting in constipation. Many of us take additional fiber to help curb our issues, but hydration AND fiber is the perfect combination. Not only will your body be sufficiently hydrated, but water will plump up the fiber for optimal digestion.
However, it is important to remember that not all water is created equal. According to Dr. Villanueva at Modern Holistic Health, the water we consume should come from a pure source, without additives, and especially without Fluoride. Fluoride is a serious neurotoxin that can derail our bodies, so it is extremely important to consume purified water. Unfortunately, our tap water contains this serious neurotoxin, so it is best to invest in a purified water home delivery service or a tabletop water purifier.
Also, the next time you reach for a bottle of water, make sure the bottle contains purified water and not spring water. While spring and purified water can come from the same source, the difference is how the water is treated prior to bottling. Spring water must be collected from a pure, underground source that has natural flow to the earth’s surface, and contain all the original properties prior to treatment and bottle. Tap water could be classified as spring water and thus, spring water may contain all the chemicals found in our public water supply, including Fluoride. Purchasing purifying bottled water will ensure that regardless of the source, the water is filtered to remove harmful chemicals.
So, find a favorite water bottle or canister and carry it with you as many places as you can. It will soon become a habit, and you won’t think twice about drinking water. You’ll feel the difference!
