Holistic Medicine for Arthritis and Joint Pain

Whatever your condition might be, holistic approaches always provide a solid foundation for healing.

Even for chronic pain conditions like arthritis, holistic medicine offers a ray of hope for many people.  Those who have fibromyalgia, arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and other conditions that cause joint pain find relief when they apply holistic principles that reduce inflammation and encourage body movement.  Tai Chi has been used for centuries, not only incorporates gentle body movements, it also focuses on breath and meditation which are great tools for reducing and managing pain.

Another example of ancient therapies that are used even today that have been scientifically validated includes comprehensive approaches to heal the whole person: mind, body, spirit, and emotions — with the objective of helping people restore proper balance in their bodies so they can recover from a range of conditions, including chronic pain.

It’s important to understand that not all holistic methods and approaches are created similarly and some natural healing methods will produce quicker and better results than others.  If you want to address chronic pain issues such as joint aches and arthritis with holistic approaches, here are a few natural pain relievers you can try.  In many cases, these approaches provide a great addition to what you are already doing and when working with a health coach or holistic doctor many people find that these tips below combined with individualized protocols based on your specific genetic makeup and lab results can yield a complete resolution to long time chronic pain sufferers.

1. Tai Chi:

A low-impact activity that can increase motion and strengthen joints and surrounding muscle tissue, tai chi is an ancient spiritual and physical practice that can help arthritis symptoms by reducing their symptoms and sometimes even eliminating them all together.

According to research, tai chi can relieve pain and other side-effects of osteoarthritis, and stiffness. In addition to pain relief,  tai chi can improve the range of motion which helps to alleviate joint pain for people living with rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia.

2. Yoga:

Another ancient technique that promotes natural recovery, yoga is perfect for individuals suffering from joint pain and lower back issues. Gentle stretches and positions opening the joints can assist, prevent, and alleviate chronic soreness in the shoulders, knees, and hips.

A form of yoga called mudras uses a series of hand gestures to increase energy and concentration and improve a state of mind.

3. Massage:

An invigorating massage with essential warm oil can assist many conditions, and joint pain is one of them.

By enhancing blood flow, soothing inflammation, and relaxing the muscle tissue, a well-timed massage can increase the range of motion and ease joint stiffness in individuals struggling with arthritis, fibromyalgia, and other chronic pain conditions.

4. Acupuncture:

A review of medical research studies has shown that acupuncture can assist in relieving musculoskeletal pain caused by fibromyalgia and other chronic pain conditions. By activating the body’s natural pain relief system and stimulating the nerves, connective tissue, and muscles, acupuncture can relieve joint pain for people who are resistant to other holistic pain relief techniques.

5. Diet Changes:

An apple a day may or may not keep the doctor away,  however, a custom-tailored diet based on testing and genetic interpretations can help you understand which foods might be causing additional inflammation causing your chronic joint pain. Nutritional tweaks can also include specific doses or combinations of supplements like Omega 3 fatty acids, glutathione, methyl folate,  CBD, and glucosamine, which can reduce joint pain in osteoporosis and arthritis patients.

To alleviate joint problems, your pantry must be stocked with foods that promote healing and reduce inflammation, and understanding which foods are inflammatory and which foods are anti-inflammatory as well as which foods specific to your body are inflammatory causing is a huge game-changer for those long term sufferers of chronic pain.

6. Aromatherapy:

If you believe pain relief can’t smell good, you are mistaken. Studies have shown that peppermint and eucalyptus oil can minimize pain, swelling, and discomfort in patients with inflamed joints. For joint stiffness and soreness caused by arthritis, aromatherapy experts recommend regular application of myrrh, orange, turmeric, or frankincense oil to ease inflammation and pain and to increase the range of motion.

You can also combine aromatherapy with alternating cold and heat treatments. Make sure to keep the tender joints elevated during treatment to reduce swelling.

7. Spa Treatments:

Few things can beat the appeal of a full-scale spa experience. If you are suffering from knee, hip, shoulder, or elbow pain and other holistic approaches haven’t quite knocked out the pain or stiffness, try balneotherapy, which integrates aqua massage with deep soaks in heated mineral water and medical mud baths.

One study found that balneotherapy substantially minimized knee and neck and back pain in older adults.

8. Aquatic Sports:

If you do not wish to immerse yourself in the healing mineral waters, you can supplement your holistic pain therapy with water aerobics, swimming, aqua spinning, or aqua jogging. According to research studies, water exercises can improve joint function and ease the pain for osteoarthritis patients.

Furthermore, a research study found that aquatic circuit training can help relieve knee pain in cases of progressed osteoarthritis.

9. Capsaicin cream:

Another natural treatment for stiffness and joint pain is homemade capsaicin cream, which can assist in reducing swelling and help to more easily increase range of motion. To remain on the safe side, you need to take care when handling hot peppers when preparing the cream and prevent using it on damaged and sensitive skin. This is a commonly used holistic approach for rheumatoid arthritis.  These creams can also be found online for purchase.

As our bodies age, joint pain can end up being chronic. If you do not want to take your chances with conventional pharmaceuticals, you can always turn to holistic approaches for arthritis and other body pain.
