If you have this, it doubles your risk of major depressive disorder

One of these gateways to chronic disease, mental health disorders, neurodegenerative disease, and even cancer is known as insulin resistance.

While statistics show that 40 percent of all adults now have insulin resistance, what we are seeing clinically is that over 60% of our clients all have insulin resistance when they first come to us seeking help. Even more alarming, doctors and health providers are now seeing insulin resistance (and type 2 diabetes) in children as young as 9 years old!

While the major contributors to insulin resistance are excess weight from excessive intake of sugars and carbohydrates and lack of physical activity, we have also seen in our clinical studies that environmental toxins, toxic mold, stress, trauma, and lack of quality sleep are also playing a major factor.

Experts also say that obesity, especially excess fat around the waist, is a primary cause of insulin resistance. Scientists used to think that fat tissue functioned solely as energy storage, however, more recent research is showing that belly fat causes a cascade effect of major hormone imbalance that creates the perfect storm for leading to serious health problems such as type 2 diabetes, cysts and nodules on the thyroid, neurodegenerative diseases like Dementia, high blood pressure, imbalanced cholesterol, cardiovascular disease, and even major depressive disorder.

Excess belly fat not only paves the way for developing a host of serious chronic diseases, it also causes a dangerous cascade of long-lasting inflammation in the body and brain. Chronic inflammation can damage the body over time without any signs or symptoms. Complex interactions in fat tissue draw immune cells to the area and trigger low-level chronic inflammation.

Studies show that losing weight can reduce insulin resistance, inflammation, and prevent or delay type 2 diabetes and the host of other diseases commonly associated with the insulin resistance cascade.

Physical Inactivity

Physical inactivity is a common root cause that is associated with insulin resistance and often leads to type 2 diabetes. In the body, our muscles collectively use more glucose than any other tissues. Normally active muscles burn their store of glucose for energy and refill their reserves with glucose taken from the bloodstream, keeping the blood glucose levels in balance.

Studies show that after exercising, muscles become more sensitive to insulin, reversing insulin resistance and lowering blood glucose levels. Exercise also helps muscles absorb more glucose without the need for insulin. The more muscle a body has, the more glucose it can burn to control blood glucose levels.

Other causes

Other causes of insulin resistance may include high mental stress, certain diseases, hormone or thyroid imbalances, high cortisol levels, steroid use, mold toxicity, heavy metal toxicity, environmental chemical toxicity, unresolved trauma, unprocessed emotions, improper breathing, poor quality sleep, especially sleep apnea, and cigarette smoking.

What is insulin resistance?

Insulin resistance is a condition in which the body produces insulin but does not use it effectively. When people have insulin resistance, glucose can’t distribute itself into the various tissues and organs to be used up and so it builds up in the blood leading to type 2 diabetes, significant body and brain inflammation, and the cascade of other diseases I mentioned earlier.

While it’s easy to identify on simple blood labs if a person is headed in the direction of disease (like type 2 diabetes for example), most doctors are not taking proactive approaches with their patients and instead just wait until they develop the actual disease, which can be a serious and lifelong and cause terrible and needless suffering on the part of the patient. The good news is that holistic approaches have shown time and time again to consistently reverse and completely heal from most chronic diseases including insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes!

Some of the other serious conditions that start as insulin resistance that I haven’t already mentioned include sleep issues, fatigue, brain fog, damage to your nerves, blood vessels, heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, lower limb amputations, and major depressive disorder.

A recently published article from Stanford goes on to say “Upward of 1 in 5 Americans experiences major depressive disorder sometime during their lives. Symptoms include unremitting sadness, despair, sluggishness, sleep disturbances, and loss of appetite. Some factors contributing to this deeply debilitating disease — childhood traumas, loss of a loved one, or the stresses of the COVID-19 pandemic, for example — are things we can’t prevent. But insulin resistance is preventable: It can be reduced or eliminated by diet, exercise, and if need be, drugs.”

It’s worth noting the last part of the sentence above… “drugs”. We know that drugs don’t cure anything. While they can be lifesaving for short periods, there are no drugs that cure insulin resistance. This failure to properly address and ‘cure’ insulin resistance is why here in the U.S. we now have 1 in 3 people walking around with insulin resistance.

Metabolic Syndrome. More than just a trifecta for the perfect storm.

While insulin resistance itself is a big root cause leading to a host of diseases, when combined with other factors like high blood pressure, abdominal fat, and unhealthy cholesterol levels, a person’s risk for heart disease and strokes more than doubles.

The good news is that metabolic syndrome can be completely reversed largely with changes to your lifestyle!

While it’s important to know these conditions can be caused by a multitude of factors, starting with the most common cause, which is excessive intake of simple carbs and sugars and not getting enough protein calories or exercise, is the most common root cause of metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes.

We see a large number of new clients each month who start working with us who had no idea that they had any or all of these conditions including insulin resistance, unhealthy cholesterol levels, high markers of systemic inflammation, or even type 2 diabetes and the good news is that we have been able to provide our clients with solutions that work!

Every day, we have clients who have been able to finally come off their high blood pressure meds, diabetes meds, and cholesterol meds because they learned and applied data-driven solutions that healed their bodies.
